Ultrasound Exam

Madison Radiology is one of few facilities fully accredited by the American College of Radiology in both General Ultrasound and Breast Ultrasound serving patients from East Haven, CT.

What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound imaging, sometimes referred to as sonography, is a noninvasive medical procedure used to capture images in real-time using sound waves rather than x rays to produce the images. They show the structure and movement of organs and blood flowing through blood vessels.

Ultrasound can be used to evaluate organs and diagnose problems in the thyroid, abdomen, pelvis, kidneys, testicles, and extremities as well as carotid, and renal arteries. We also perform obstetric, doppler, and venous ultrasounds.

Our Technologists and Ultrasound Scanners near East Haven

Our ultrasound scanners are “digital”, meaning that we use computers to improve the quality of the images. Our knowledgeable, professional technologists are specialty trained with accreditation and board certification in many areas.  They will put you at ease and answer all of your questions before the exam.

How to Prepare for an Ultrasound in East Haven, CT

Most ultrasound exams for patients near East Haven do not require any preparation prior to the exam. Wear comfortable clothing around the area to be scanned. You may also be asked to wear a gown. You can visit our Patient portal to review exam preparation for your exam.  For example, if you are having an abdominal ultrasound, you will be asked to fast for 6 hours prior to the exam. For routine pelvic ultrasounds, please come to our office with a full bladder.  For transvaginal pelvic ultrasounds, your bladder can be empty.  For kidney, exams ensure you are well hydrated.

If you have had a previous study of this area, please bring these with you and inform your technologist so we can use these used for comparison.

What to expect

Our technologist will take a brief medical history. You will be asked to lie down on the scanning table and the ultrasound technologists (sonographer) will place a clear warm gel on the area of the body to be imaged. The sonographer then presses the transducer against the skin and sweeps it back and forth over the area of interest. The transducer is a small hand-held device that resembles a microphone, attached to an ultrasound machine by a cord. The test is painless to perform. After the exam, the gel is wiped off and you may resume normal activities.  Ultrasounds typically take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the exam performed.

Your Results

Your doctor(s) will receive a full detailed written report from our highly trained radiologists within one day.  If requested we will provide you with a CD copy of your exam to bring to your referring physician on your follow-up visit.  Our goal is to provide you with the highest level of customer service and image quality in a caring and supportive environment.
