Bone Density (DXA exam or Bone densitometry)

Bone Densitometry Services Killingworth

DEXA stands for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. After the age of 35, most people will experience bone loss. However, for some women an increased loss of bone mass can result in fragile bones, physical deformity and pain, a condition known as osteoporosis. Bone densitometry or bone density testing is used to evaluate the degree of bone loss and can help you and your physician make decisions about your treatment.

The difference between a bone density test and a bone scan

A bone density examination is used to assess the mass of the hips and spine to determine if bone loss is taking place. A bone scan is a nuclear medicine study of the skeletal system. At Madison Radiology, we perform bone density testing. Your physician will refer you to the appropriate facility if you are in need of a bone scan.

Who will perform my bone density testing near where I live in Killingworth, CT?

Our radiologic technologists, who are licensed by the State of Connecticut, will perform your bone density testing. They are registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, have completed a 2-year course of study and have passed a comprehensive examination. They have also received extensive training in order to administer bone density testing.

A bone density test is a quick and painless procedure. You will lie on your back on a table. A scanner will pass over your spine and hips, taking pictures as it moves. These images are sent to a computer that analyzes the data and prints the results. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes.

How do I prepare for a bone density test?

There is no special preparation needed for a bone density examination. You should wear comfortable clothing without any metal buttons, zippers or snaps.

What to Expect - Bone Density Exams Killingworth

Prior to scanning, our technologist will review your medical history.  You will be asked to fill out a Bone Density Questionnaire and screening sheet to review any past surgical history. You can complete this and bring it with you or our technologists will complete it with you.

You may be asked to wear a gown. You will be asked to lie face-up on a padded table. An x-ray detector or arm is located above the table. To assess your spine, your legs are supported on a padded box to flatten the pelvis and lower spine. To assess your hip, your foot will be placed in a brace that rotates your hip inward. In both cases, the detector arm is slowly passed over the hip and spine generating images on a computer monitor. Just relax and remain still for a few seconds. It is a quick and painless procedure. There are no restrictions after the exam.

You can expect a 20-30 minute appointment time, the scan will take about 10 minutes.
